If not, In my last post I touched on how your hair and skin needs change during the aging process and how those changes indicate we need to change our routine. The first step is visit your stylist, tell them your hair concerns and issues, is your hair dry, does it break or not hold a curl, is it dull? We choose products based on your hairs density, diameter, porosity and elasticity as well as scalp condition. Hair that is thin, fine, and fragile needs something different than hair that is thin, fine and dull or dry and so on. My hair is about 60% grey it became increasingly grey as my hormones started changing it was suddenly fragile, now I use Kerastase Bain Age Recharge to give my hair strength and shine along with Kerastase Masque Age Recharge to help repair and protect my hair. These two products are intended for a client with long hair ( hair that is weakened by time) or hair that is changing due to hormones (for example Pre menopause). Another example of a product that would be benificial in this circumstance would be Shu Uemura Prime Plenish Vitalizing Shampoo and Conditioner or Treatment, most professional skin and hair care companies have products that specifically to address time and age related changes. Kerastase is a treatment line, intended for hair in need of more intense repair, if your hair does not need intense repair and is fine you may find Shu Uemura to be a better choice. Shu Uemura shampoo and conditioners work together with their styling products to allow you to go longer between shampoos and help maintain your blow-dry over time.
When clients come in complaining of hair that has lost its suppleness, is falling, experiencing dry scalp, along with time related hormone issues like being post menopausal my recommendations changes. In this instance I would recommend Kerastase Bain Substantif Shampoo and Kerastase Masque Substantif, these are anti oxidant rich, rejuvenating treatments that add suppleness, shine strength as well as help tighten the hair follicle by plumping and moisturizing the scalp. All of these products are color safe.
SO why is is important to use professional products recommended by a licensed cosmetologist and not to just head out to the local grocery store? Often as consumers we want what smells good or make our hair feel smooth. Did you know that many conditioners that leave your hair feeling smooth only coat your hair to create a feeling of healthy hair? Professional products recommended by professionals actually treat the issue instead of just masking the problem and as you can see there are more factors to consider than you thought. Often clients come in complaining of dry hair and it turns out they were using a product to strengthen the hair not moisturize it. Now make sure to discuss your concerns with your stylist and if they don’t make a recommendation ask for one. Some stylist worry that you will think they are pushing you into buying something and are afraid to make suggestions. My next suggestion is you ask the stylist to show you or tell you how to properly shampoo your hair, professional products are far more concentrated that grocery store products so you don’t want to send your investment in your hair right down the drain, I find a bottle of shampoo last 4 months or more and conditioner longer than that. For more information on how to use your shampoo check out our earlier post on proper shampooing.
